Osteoporosis – natural ways to build stronger bones 

Prevention of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis literally means ‘porous bones’ and is a condition where bones lose density causing them to become weak and more likely to break (fracture). It’s estimated to be responsible for more than 230,000 fractures every year in the UK.

About one in two women and one in five men over 50 will fracture a bone because of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can affect people of any age but is most common in postmenopausal women.

Prevention is a simple two step approach; eat well and get plenty of weight-bearing exercise when you’re young. But if you are no longer as young as you once were, there is still plenty you can do to take matters into your own hands and improve your bone strength by increasing their density.

To help strengthen your bones and improve your fitness, you need to do weight-bearing physical activities such as aerobics, dancing, brisk walking and jogging. Weight lifting is another effective way to boost your bone density. to give your bones. Do ask your GP for advise on suitable exercises.

Gentler activities which are still beneficial are swimming, gardening, Tai Chi and golf. Balance, muscle tone, co-ordination are usually improved which help to reduce your chances of falling and fracturing a bone.

Eating for strong bones.

A diet rich in calcium is important for maintaining healthy bones. Good sources of calcium include milk, hard cheese, yogurt, dried apricots, figs and green leafy vegetables such as watercress and curly kale.

Foods containing high levels of animal protein such as meat and cheese, salt, phosphoric acid and caffeine normally have a detrimental effect on the balance of calcium in the body. Many fizzy drinks are flavoured with phosphoric acid so these are best avoided in preference for water, fruit juice or a glass of milk which is rich in calcium.
